What an operations manager handles at a handyman company
Each tech's day holds several short jobs that need different skills and gear. The operations manager makes the pieces fit.
Heavier vans that cross a state line
Metros like Kansas City and Louisville straddle a state line, and territories often cross it. A van, or a truck and trailer, whose weight rating or actual weight is 10,001 pounds or more becomes a commercial motor vehicle in FMCSA's rules when it hauls tools and materials across that line. The company must then register for a USDOT number. The operations manager knows each vehicle's rating before assigning it. Source: eCFR: 49 CFR 390.5, definition of commercial motor vehicle.
Chemicals ride in every van
Vans carry caulk, glue, solvents and spray foam. Most fall under OSHA's hazard communication standard when techs use them more often than a household would. Techs move between homes all day, so the safety data sheets may stay at the main office. But the company must make sure a tech can pull up that information at once in an emergency. The operations manager keeps each van's chemical list current and the sheets on every phone. Source: eCFR: 29 CFR 1910.1200, hazard communication.
Shared gear gets booked with the job
Every van needs a standard kit. Some jobs also need shared gear, such as a tile saw, a drywall lift or a dust-collecting vacuum. The operations manager tracks who has each item and books it with the job. Anything damaged gets pulled before it reaches the next home.
Time slots that hold up
Handyman jobs are hard to time. A quick fix can turn up rot or a stripped anchor. The operations manager sets slot lengths from past job times for each task type and leaves room late in the day. Vacant rental units, where no one waits at home, fill the gaps around tight homeowner windows.
How much handyman services operations managers make
The closest BLS group for handyman services operations managers is general and operations managers. General and operations managers who work for residential builders and remodelers earned a median of $105,010 a year ($50.48 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s about the same as the $105,770 median for general and operations managers in all industries. About 40,030 of the 3,503,020 general and operations managers in that survey work for residential builders and remodelers.
Base pay with a bonus for hitting schedule and equipment goals. The BLS code also includes general managers, which helps explain why the template's range is lower than that median.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach
Hire for these
Builds a full week of schedules for many techs across territories
Keeps track of vehicles, tools and stock without losing things
Decides fast when a repair overruns its slot or a tech calls out
Talks with techs in a way they respect
Works comfortably in scheduling software and spreadsheets
Teach these on the job
Your service menu and typical task times
FMCSA basics for heavier vehicles
Hazard communication steps for van chemicals
Your territory map and drive times
Your tool checkout and van restock routine
Expect daily use of the field service app's schedule and job board, a fleet tracking or GPS app, and an inventory or tool checkout list. Name them in the ad, along with whether vans go home with techs.
Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.
Situational · Allocating technicians
You have [6] technicians and [25] jobs tomorrow, and one technician just called out. How do you decide what moves?
A strong answer: Ranks by urgency, promised windows, skills and location; moves flexible jobs, calls those customers early and checks tools and parts for reassigned work.
Behavioral · Raising billable time
Tell me about a time you raised the share of paid time spent on billable work.
A strong answer: Measured where time went, fixed causes such as routing or store runs, and shows the result.
At a company this size, usually not. A dispatcher runs the live board and takes customer calls. The operations manager sets the rules: slot lengths, territory lines, the skills each job needs, and who covers when a tech is out. Keeping the two apart lets the operations manager fix tomorrow's problems instead of reacting all day.
How much does a handyman services operations manager make?
General and operations managers who work for residential builders and remodelers earned a median of $105,010 a year ($50.48 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $72,790 and $156,380 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and bonus terms.
Should handyman techs take company vans home?
Take-home vans save a morning trip to the shop, so techs start at their first job. They also mean less control over stock, mileage and personal use. If you allow them, write a policy on personal use, stock checks and parking. Ask your accountant how the IRS treats commuting in a company vehicle.
How far ahead should a handyman company book jobs?
Far enough that techs have full days, but not so far that customers give up and call someone else. Watch how far out the first open slot sits in each territory. When it keeps sliding later, hire or move techs between territories. Hold a little room each day for urgent repairs and rush orders from property managers.
What do the lifting, walking and climate lines in this template mean?
They cover field time. That means walking job sites and the shop yard, and loading or unloading tools and supplies up to the stated weight. It also means checking vans outdoors in every season and working near power tools during inspections. Include these duties in the ad, and treat accommodation requests one at a time.
