A handyman services dispatcher turns each day's booked visits into routes for the techs, matching every task list to someone with the right skills and parts. If a list takes longer than planned or a tech calls in sick, they rework the board and tell the affected customers.

A handyman board fills with short visits of every kind, so the dispatcher plans around task lists, drive time, lunch breaks and deadlines set by other people.
Lunch breaks go on the route
Kentucky law says a worker's lunch should fall as close to the middle of the shift as possible, and no one can be made to take it sooner than three hours or later than five hours after the shift starts. The dispatcher leaves that gap in every tech's route, close to the next stop, and doesn't fill it with a quick job when the morning runs ahead. A mutual agreement with a tech can set other timing. Drive time between homes is paid time
Under federal wage rules, the drive between customers' homes in the middle of the workday counts as hours worked. For hourly techs, every long gap between stops costs wages as well as fuel. A dispatcher who clusters visits by neighborhood and avoids crossing the territory twice in a day cuts that cost without dropping a single job. Source: eCFR: 29 CFR 785.38, travel that is all in the day's work.
Digging tasks wait for the locate request
Mailbox posts, moved fence posts and play set anchors all mean digging. In Kentucky, anyone responsible for an excavation must notify the 811 center at least two and no more than ten full working days before work starts. The dispatcher books digging tasks after that window and treats any new hole as needing a request. Source: Kentucky Revised Statutes 367.4911, excavator notice.
Turnovers run on move-in dates
Property managers send vacant units with a punch list and a move-in date that can't slip. The dispatcher logs each deadline on the job, checks the list against the working days left, and tells the manager early when it won't finish in time, so they can push the date or approve a second tech. Items added after the manager's walk-through get their own visit unless the date allows.
How much handyman services dispatchers make
Dispatchers who work for residential builders and remodelers earned a median of $25.44 an hour ($52,910 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s above the $50,340 median for dispatchers in all industries. About 400 of the 202,810 dispatchers in that survey work for residential builders and remodelers.
Dispatchers here are hourly, and some companies add a bonus linked to on-schedule visits and customer ratings. The template pays less than the middle of the BLS range for dispatchers in this industry but more than the bottom tenth.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach
Hire for these
Reading a task list and judging the visit length
A working map of the neighborhoods each territory covers
Calm, quick calls to customers when a slot moves
Juggling the board, the phone and tech texts at once
Firm, fair calls on which job waits
Teach these on the job
Each tech's skills, tools and trade limits
Your field service software's dispatch board
Property manager account rules and turnover deadlines
Locate request steps for digging tasks
The dispatcher lives on the scheduling board and map view in the job software, for example Jobber or ServiceTitan, with van GPS and a group text thread for techs. Put your setup in the job post, and say if the role also manages online booking.
Handyman services dispatcher interview questions
Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.
Situational · Handling jobs that run long
A technician says a door install will take [2] more hours because the frame is rotted, and two customers are waiting after it. What do you do?
A strong answer: Checks that the customer approved the added work and price, sees who else can take the next jobs, calls the waiting customers early with honest times, and updates the board.
Behavioral · Handling call-outs
Tell me about a day when two technicians called out and the board was full of short jobs. How did you handle the schedule?
A strong answer: Grouped jobs by area and skill, moved flexible jobs, called those customers early with real times, and says how the day ended.
Read the template's targets as samples, and set goals for each territory once you have a few weeks of board data.
Task Completion Rate
From the job records, count assigned tasks finished on the scheduled visit, and list the reasons for the rest, such as a missing part or a list that ran long.
Response Time
Measure the minutes from a request landing in the queue or voicemail to the dispatcher assigning it or calling the customer back.
Customer Satisfaction Rating
Pull comments about arrival times, late notices and reschedules out of the post-visit survey, since those are the parts the dispatcher controls.
Technician Efficiency
Compare each tech's actual start and finish times with the scheduled ones in the field app, and separate delays caused by the job from delays caused by routing.
Does a handyman dispatcher need to know the trades?
Not to do the work, but they need a feel for it. Someone who knows that hanging a door takes longer than swapping a light fixture, and that a drywall patch needs drying time, builds days that hold. A few ride-alongs early on and a short task-time cheat sheet close the gap quickly.
How much does a handyman services dispatcher make?
Dispatchers who work for residential builders and remodelers earned a median of $25.44 an hour ($52,910 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $42,210 and $59,320 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.
When would a handyman dispatcher be on call?
The template allows for it, so say how often in the ad. After-hours calls at a handyman company tend to be a door that won't lock, a small leak under a sink or a broken window that needs boarding. The on-call dispatcher uses a short written list to decide what waits until morning and what needs a tech that night.
How many techs can one handyman dispatcher keep moving?
It depends on how many stops each tech makes and how often lists change. Techs running many short visits create more changes than techs on long installs. Watch for warning signs: late notices going out after the customer has already called, techs waiting on their next job, or notes left blank. When those show up, split the territories or add a dispatcher.
Should the dispatcher order parts for tomorrow's jobs?
Usually the dispatcher flags what's needed and someone else orders it. The dispatcher reads tomorrow's task lists for special items, like a certain door size or faucet model, passes them to whoever buys parts, and holds the job until the part is in. That keeps a tech from arriving at a job they can't finish.
What do the dispatcher template's walk-through and sitting lines mean?
Most of the day is spent at a desk with the board, phones and texts, sitting or standing as the person prefers. The walk-through line means an occasional drive around a territory to see a new neighborhood, a hard-to-reach property or a large turnover before a big day. Describe those tasks in the interview so candidates know what's involved.
