What a rehash specialist works on at a handyman company

Handyman leads are small and go cold fast, but nearly every visit leaves notes on other repairs. The rehash specialist turns those notes and unbooked quotes into work, inside the calling rules.

  • Unbooked estimates run out before paid visits

Under the federal Telemarketing Sales Rule, a homeowner who signed up for do-not-call can still get your sales call inside an established business relationship. That lasts 540 days after a purchase or transaction, but only 90 days after an inquiry. A homeowner who asked for a quote and never booked is usually an inquiry, so that window closes first. Keep the quote date and the last paid visit date on every record. Source: eCFR 16 CFR 310.2: Telemarketing Sales Rule definitions.

  • Kansas sets its own calling rules

On an unsolicited sales call to a Kansas consumer, say who you are, which company you work for and why you're calling as soon as they answer, and end the pitch at the first no. Don't hide your number from caller ID. Kansas treats a customer from the past 18 months as an established relationship, but once a customer says no more calls, Kansas makes you honor it for five years. Source: Kansas Statutes 50-670: Kansas no-call act.

  • A reply of "stop" ends the texts

Old quotes often go out by text with job photos. FCC rules say a customer who texts back "stop," "cancel," "quit" or "unsubscribe" has revoked consent, and you get ten business days at most to act on it. Texts that advertise and go out through an autodialer require prior express written consent. On revocation, the FCC took up changes in September 2026; check the current rule. Source: eCFR 47 CFR 64.1200: Telephone and text solicitation rules.

  • The tech's notes make the warmest list

Techs spot a loose stair rail, cracked caulk around a tub or a door that won't latch while they're fixing something else. When the customer approves only part of the work, the rest sits in the job notes. Call within a few days while the visit is fresh, send the tech's photo, and offer to fold the items into a visit that's already on the calendar.

  • Check the price and the scope before calling

A quote from last season may no longer cover the materials, and a small leak or soft spot may have grown since. Before you call, confirm the quote is still good under your price book. If the photos show water damage or rot, ask a sales rep or lead handyman to re-scope it so you don't re-sell a job the tech can't finish.

How much handyman services rehash specialists make

The closest BLS group for handyman services rehash specialists is telemarketers. Telemarketers who work for residential builders and remodelers earned a median of $17.40 an hour ($36,180 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s about the same as the $35,450 median for telemarketers in all industries. About 980 of the 58,430 telemarketers in that survey work for residential builders and remodelers.

Pay is often a base plus commission or a bonus on work booked. The template's base sits above the BLS telemarketer figures for this industry, so compare it with what inside sales and booking jobs pay near you.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach

Hire for these

  • A friendly, unhurried phone manner with people who already said no once
  • Accurate CRM notes and status codes on every call and text
  • The habit of checking consent and do-not-call status before each contact
  • Enough feel for common home repairs to explain what a tech found
  • Steady follow-through on callback dates

Teach these on the job

  • Your price book, trip charge and minimum visit policy
  • Reading tech notes and job photos
  • Your dialer, texting tool and field service software
  • Federal and Kansas calling rules
  • Which tasks go to a licensed trade partner

Rehash work lives in the job software that stores quotes and tech notes, often ServiceTitan, Jobber or Housecall Pro, along with a dialer and texting tool that logs opt-outs. Check numbers against the National Do Not Call Registry before any list goes out.

Handyman services rehash specialist interview questions

Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.

  1. Situational · Re-engaging past customers

A customer had a visit [6] months ago and mentioned other projects they wanted done later. How do you approach them?

A strong answer: Reads the notes, mentions the specific projects, asks about timing, offers to book and logs the result.

  2. Behavioral · Suggesting extra work honestly

Tell me about a time you suggested an extra service and the customer was glad you did.

A strong answer: The suggestion came from the customer's real need and they understood the cost before agreeing.

Handyman services rehash specialist KPIs

The figures in the template are placeholders. After a quarter of tagged rehash bookings, set targets that fit your lead volume and the season.

Re-engagement conversion rate
Jobs booked from the rehash list divided by leads worked in the same period, from the CRM. Tag rehash bookings so the original ad doesn't also get the credit.
Follow-up call success rate
Calls that reach the person and end with a clear yes, no or callback date, divided by calls made. The phone system's call log and CRM outcome codes give both counts.
Additional monthly revenue generated
Invoiced revenue from jobs this person booked, counted when the work is finished and billed rather than when it's scheduled. Take out jobs that cancel.
Customer satisfaction rating
Average post-visit rating on jobs the rehash specialist booked, from the survey your field service app sends. Compare it with the company average to catch promises the tech couldn't keep.

Handyman services rehash specialist FAQ

Which unbooked handyman quotes should be called first?

Start with fresh quote requests, while the homeowner still remembers the visit and the shorter inquiry window is still open. Next come long lists that would fill most of a tech's day, then property managers who send repeat work. Quotes where the customer named a deadline, such as guests arriving or a move-out date, go near the top because the reason to book hasn't gone away.

How much does a handyman services rehash specialist make?

Telemarketers who work for residential builders and remodelers earned a median of $17.40 an hour ($36,180 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $32,170 and $39,850 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.

Should a rehash specialist call a customer who complained?

Not with a sales pitch until the complaint is closed. Send the issue to the office manager or operations, and note it on the record so nobody else calls to sell. Once the fix is done and the customer is satisfied, a call about the other items on the tech's notes is fine and often welcome.

Is a discount ever the right way to win back a handyman quote?

Only inside a written limit the sales manager sets. Try a smaller scope or adding the work to a visit already booked before any discount. Never suggest the first quote was padded, since that makes every other quote look suspect.

Should a rehash specialist book straight onto the techs' schedule?

Book into slots that dispatch has opened for follow-up work, and list every task so the visit gets the right length and the right tech. If the customer wants a day that isn't open, take a few choices and let dispatch confirm rather than squeezing the job in.

Why does the rehash template mention lifting 20 pounds?

The physical lines ship as written. The lifting would come on an occasional trip to a property manager's office or a homeowner's house, carrying a laptop bag, a box of printed quotes or a few hardware samples. Otherwise it's a desk job of calls and screens. If a candidate asks for an accommodation, work it out with them.
