What changes for marketing at a handyman company

Handyman ads sell dozens of small tasks in several territories at once, and a few words in an ad or on a van can bring legal duties. Here is where the job departs from marketing a single trade.

  • A roof ad can end Kansas's small-job exemption

Kansas exempts a person from its roofing contractor rules when every roofing job they do in a fiscal year is priced under 2,000 dollars. That exemption doesn't cover anyone who advertises or puts out a sign or card that might tell the public they are a roofing contractor. So a "roof repair" line on the website, a yard sign or a flyer can pull the company under the act. Clear any roof wording with whoever holds the company's registrations before it runs. Source: Kansas Statutes 50-6,129: Roofing registration exemptions.

  • Kentucky van wraps carry license numbers

If your Kentucky company runs plumbing, electrical or HVAC work, each vehicle used in that business must show the matching Kentucky license number: the master plumber's, the electrical contractor's or the master HVAC contractor's. The letters and numbers must be at least three inches high and readable from outside. Build the number into the wrap design for those vans instead of adding a sticker later. Source: Kentucky 815 KAR 2:030: Vehicle identification.

  • Painting and drywall ads reach older homes

EPA's lead rule bars a firm from doing renovations in target housing (the older homes the rule covers) or child-occupied facilities without EPA firm certification, and also from offering or claiming to do them, unless an exception applies. Treat an ad for interior painting, drywall patching or window repair as an offer. Before those services go on the website or into a mailer, confirm the firm certificate is current. Where a state runs its own lead program, check that state's certificate instead. Source: eCFR 40 CFR 745.81: Lead renovation effective dates.

  • Reviews from inside the company

The FTC's review rule bars an officer or manager from posting a review of the company without disclosing the connection. If a manager wants reviews from techs, office staff or their family members, the manager must tell them to disclose that tie and must act when a review appears without it. A review widget also can't present itself as showing all or most reviews while hiding the low ones. Put these rules in writing for the whole company and anyone running the website. Source: eCFR 16 CFR Part 465: Consumer reviews and testimonials.

  • Ad money follows open tech hours

A homeowner who can't get a slot soon usually books with someone else. Check each territory's open hours with operations every week, and shift spend toward territories with room and away from those booked solid. Do the same by service: push the tasks every tech in that territory can handle, and pause ads for work only one tech is trained to do.

How much handyman services marketing managers make

Marketing managers who work for residential builders and remodelers earned a median of $115,970 a year ($55.76 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s below the $166,790 median for marketing managers in all industries. About 1,320 of the 395,240 marketing managers in that survey work for residential builders and remodelers.

Most handyman companies pay this role a salary with a bonus linked to booked jobs or campaign results. BLS puts the middle pay for marketing managers here well above the template's range, which sits near the bottom of the spread.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach

Hire for these

  • Local search skills: a Google Business Profile for each territory, service pages and local ads
  • Tying spend to booked and paid jobs, not just leads
  • Plain ad copy that promises only what the techs can do
  • Managing one budget across several territories
  • Working with the office so every promotion can be booked on the first call

Teach these on the job

  • Your service menu and the tasks you hand to licensed partners
  • Lead source codes in your field service software
  • Ad wording rules for roofing, lead-safe work and licensed trades
  • How each territory's demand shifts through the year
  • Your review request process

Expect Housecall Pro, Jobber, ServiceTitan or a similar job app to hold the lead source for every job, plus Google Business Profile, Google Ads, call tracking and an email and text tool. The template names HubSpot or Salesforce for CRM and automation, so list the stack you really run.

Handyman services marketing manager interview questions

Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.

  1. Situational · Managing rising lead costs

Your monthly budget is fixed, and the cost per lead keeps climbing. What do you do?

A strong answer: Compares cost per booked job by channel, cuts weak channels, fixes conversion such as answering speed and booking, and invests in repeat customers and referrals.

  2. Behavioral · Marketing to past customers

Tell me about a campaign aimed at past customers. What did it produce?

A strong answer: The audience, the offer, how they reached people and the booked jobs that resulted.

Handyman services marketing manager KPIs

Use the template's targets to see what to measure, then pick your own numbers once every territory has a few months of tagged jobs.

Brand Engagement Rate
Comments, shares, saves and clicks divided by reach on your social posts and Google Business Profile updates, from each platform's insights. Compare by territory, quarter against quarter.
Campaign ROI
Gross profit on jobs booked from a campaign, minus what the campaign cost, divided by that cost. Pull job totals by lead source from the field service app and use profit, not invoice totals.
Lead Conversion Rate
Booked jobs divided by new leads, both from the CRM, with a source on every lead. Count a homeowner once even if they call and also fill in the web form.
Social Media Growth
Net new followers per platform each month and engagement per post. Check that followers live inside your territories, since people outside the map can't book a visit.

Handyman services marketing manager FAQ

Can a handyman company advertise a free estimate and still charge a trip fee?

Only if the ad is honest about the condition. The FTC's guidance on free offers says the terms of a free offer belong at the outset, close to the offer itself, and an asterisk pointing to a footnote doesn't count. It also says not to make up the cost by raising the price of what the customer must buy. If the trip fee is waived when the customer books the work, say that in the same line as the offer.

How much does a handyman services marketing manager make?

Marketing managers who work for residential builders and remodelers earned a median of $115,970 a year ($55.76 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $87,750 and $156,000 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and bonus terms.

Which handyman services should get the most ad money?

Rank each service by gross profit per tech hour and by how often the first visit turns into a second list, using a year of job records from your field service app. Services that score well on both earn the steady budget. Check callback rates by service each quarter too, since a task that brings return trips costs more than its ad report shows.

How should a handyman marketing manager work with the office and dispatch?

Before any promotion goes live, give the CSRs the offer code, the exact terms and a short script, and confirm with dispatch that the slots exist. A spring gutter or door special that the office can't book within the week wastes the spend and annoys callers. Meet the office manager weekly to hear which offers callers ask about and which ones confuse them.

Do van wraps and yard signs still bring in handyman work?

They can, because techs park in the same neighborhoods all day. Give vans, yard signs and door hangers separate tracking numbers or QR codes, and calls from each will show up in your lead sources. Keep the wrap simple: name, phone, website and the few services people call about most.
