Pool service chief financial officer job description
A pool service chief financial officer runs cash, budgets and forecasts. Weekly service plans may bill a flat monthly fee, while chemical and labor costs move with the weather. The CFO prices those plans, maps out winter cash and distributor payments, and walks the owner and the bank through the results.

In pool service, flat monthly fees meet costs that move with the heat, the season and the distributor's terms. Most of the CFO's work sits in that gap.
A hot summer raises costs, not prices
If your weekly plans include chemicals for a flat monthly fee, the weather sets part of your margin. Pool Corporation's annual report lists more buying of pool chemicals and supplies in hot, dry weather, and less in cool or very rainy weather. A hot July can mean more chlorine on the same invoice. The CFO tracks chemical cost per pool by route and month, and resets plan prices or chemical charges before the next season. Early buys move the bill to spring
The largest pool distributor, Pool Corporation, offers winter stocking terms. Its annual report says it gives qualified customers extended payment terms on pre-season early buy orders. Those orders usually come in the fourth and first quarters and are usually paid in equal installments in the second quarter. That is when spring payroll climbs too. The CFO decides how much stock to take in winter and plans for those payments landing in the same months as spring hiring. Sales tax can apply to the service itself
Sales tax rules are set state by state. Texas counts pool cleaning and maintenance as a taxable real property service, on homes and businesses alike. A company moving into a new state has to learn its rules before the first invoice goes out. The CFO sets up billing and tax by state and brings in a tax adviser when the company adds a market. Per-pool pay still owes overtime
Paying route techs per pool doesn't end overtime. Federal rules total a week's per-pool earnings plus extras like production bonuses, then divide that by all hours worked. Every hour past 40 earns another half of that hourly figure. A long spring week of openings can trigger it. The CFO checks that payroll captures every hour and every bonus. How much pool service chief financial officers make
The closest BLS group for pool service chief financial officers is chief executives. Chief executives who work for building and home services companies earned a median of $130,000 a year ($62.50 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s below the $213,990 median for chief executives in all industries. About 430 of the 204,350 chief executives in that survey work for building services companies.
A salary plus bonuses for hitting the financial targets, as the template lays out. Some owners add a deal bonus when a sale or acquisition closes.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach
Hire for these
Can show the owner in December what cash will look like in May
Costs out a service plan per pool: labor, drive time and chemicals
Has built a monthly close that still works when one person is out
Knows wage and hour rules for piece-rate and hourly field pay
Has kept a seasonal business funded through its slow months
Teach these on the job
What drives chemical use from one pool to the next
How early buy orders and rebates work with your distributor
How routes are priced and bought in your markets
How openings, closings and green-pool cleanups are priced
Sales tax rules for pool service where you operate
Two systems hold the numbers: the general ledger, often QuickBooks Online, NetSuite or Sage Intacct, and the pool service app that bills recurring plans and logs chemicals at each visit. Ask candidates how they would get cost per pool out of those two; the answer shows whether they've done it before.
Pool service chief financial officer interview questions
They have their own page: 6 questions that test this job, what strong and weak answers sound like, and a work exercise to run with your finalists.
Pick targets that match your budget and cash history. The CEO should get all four numbers every month, plus a line or two on anything that moved.
Budget adherence
For each department and service line, compare the month's revenue and spending with the budget. Give a written reason for each big gap. Show chemical costs on their own line so a hot month doesn't hide overspending elsewhere.
Cash flow stability
Cash on hand at each month-end against the reserve target, plus a rolling forecast that covers early buy payments, spring payroll and the slow months. Flag any month the forecast dips below target.
Cost savings
List each cut with its yearly effect, such as better chemical prices, fewer truck repairs, dropped software or tighter routes. Count only savings that show up in the profit and loss, not costs that just moved.
Financial report turnaround time
Write down the date the CEO receives closed financials and a cash report, and count the working days since month-end. Note what held up each close.
At what point should a pool company hire a CFO full time?
Watch the decisions, not the revenue. A bookkeeper, an outside CPA and a part-time CFO can cover a steady route business. Once you are pricing route purchases, opening markets or borrowing to get through winter, someone has to watch cash every week, and that is a full-time CFO's job. The same goes for getting ready to sell.
How much does a pool service chief financial officer make?
Chief executives who work for building and home services companies earned a median of $130,000 a year ($62.50 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $102,340 and $208,630 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and bonus terms.
How do you price chemicals into a weekly pool plan?
Start from what each pool actually uses. Log chemicals per visit in your service software, then group pools by size, sun, trees, screen enclosures and how much they're used. Price plans so heavy users don't ride on light ones, and decide whether big jobs such as green-pool cleanups are billed on their own. Recheck the numbers after every summer.
What does a pool service CFO do that a bookkeeper doesn't?
The bookkeeper's work is the record: customer payments, distributor bills, payroll entries and bank deposits. The CFO turns that record into choices about next winter's cash, next year's plan prices, how big an early buy order to place, and whether a route purchase will pay for itself. Most pool companies this size need both, with the bookkeeper reporting to the CFO or a controller.
Should a pool service CFO be a CPA?
In the template a CPA or MBA is preferred, so neither is a must. A CPA matters most when your bank wants reviewed or audited financial statements, or when a buyer reviews the books before a sale. A candidate who has priced repeat service, managed seasonal cash and run field payroll will often help sooner than one with only the credential.
What should a pool service CFO job ad include?
Describe the finance setup as it is today: revenue range, markets, who keeps the books, who files taxes, and which accounting and pool service software you run. Then name the work ahead, such as a route purchase, a new credit line, sales tax setup in a new state or a planned sale. Candidates will judge the job by that list.
