What makes pool service field supervision different

A pool route is the same work, done every week at every house, mostly with no one watching. The supervisor's job is catching slippage before customers do.

  • Quality checks happen after the truck leaves

A supervisor reviews stop photos and readings in the route app, then retests the water at pools behind each tech and looks at the floor, the tile line and the baskets. Readings that never change from week to week are worth a retest. A pattern across stops matters more than one bad visit.

  • Chemical loads fall under DOT rules

Under DOT's materials of trade exception, a service company can haul small amounts of hazardous materials in its own trucks under lighter rules than full hazmat shipping. To qualify, each container stays under a size cap and the truck's total can't pass 440 pounds. Containers must be the maker's original packaging or one as strong, marked with the contents, and whoever drives must know what's on board. Check your chlorine and acid loads against it; bigger loads fall under the full rules. Source: 49 CFR 173.6: materials of trade exceptions (Cornell LII).

  • The shop's chemical room is theirs too

Supervisors often watch over the chemical stock and reorders. CDC's pool chemical guidance says to keep chemicals in their original labeled containers, give each its own spot away from chemicals it reacts with, protect them from moisture, and keep the room well ventilated, with protective gear and safety data sheets close by. • Each season is a different job

Spring means planning openings, training new hires and adding routes. Summer brings storms, algae and make-up visits. Where pools freeze, fall closings race the first hard freeze, and winter is for training, truck repairs and checks on covered pools.

  • Escalated calls end up here

When a homeowner calls about cloudy water, a pump that won't run or a gate found unlatched, the supervisor goes out, finds the cause and decides what the company owes the customer: a free return visit, a credit or a fix at cost. A weekly customer who leaves over one bad month takes every future visit with them.

How much pool service field supervisors make

The closest BLS group for pool service field supervisors is First-Line supervisors of housekeeping and janitorial workers. First-Line supervisors of housekeeping and janitorial workers who work for building and home services companies earned a median of $23.11 an hour ($48,070 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s about the same as the $49,100 median for First-Line supervisors of housekeeping and janitorial workers in all industries. About 66,480 of the 178,760 First-Line supervisors of housekeeping and janitorial workers in that survey work for building services companies.

BLS counts these supervisors with supervisors of janitors and cleaners, the group pool servicers fall under. In the template, this is a salaried job with a performance bonus. Paying a salary and using a supervisor title won't settle overtime on their own; under DOL's test, managing has to be the primary duty. A supervisor who spends most days running a route may not qualify.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach

Hire for these

  • Strong water chemistry and equipment know-how from running a route
  • Coaches techs with specifics, using photos and readings
  • Settles an angry homeowner's complaint face to face
  • Plans coverage fast when a tech calls out
  • Keeps clean records of audits, incidents and truck checks

Teach these on the job

  • Reading route-app reports for skipped stops and chemical use
  • How you score a stop audit
  • DOT and OSHA rules for chemicals on your trucks
  • Your hiring and onboarding steps for new techs
  • Budgeting chemicals and parts by route

Supervisors live in the route software's reports, such as missed stops, chemical use and photo logs in Skimmer or Pool Brain, and carry a full test kit for retests. A truck with spare chemicals and common parts lets them fix a problem pool on the spot.

Pool service field supervisor FAQ

Should a pool field supervisor have a CPO certification?

It's a strong plus. PHTA's CPO certification spans residential and commercial pools, with topics such as water balance, disinfection and regulatory guidelines, and it lasts five years. A supervisor who holds it can teach techs the reasons behind the chemistry, and it helps if you take on community or HOA pools.

How much does a pool service field supervisor make?

First-Line supervisors of housekeeping and janitorial workers who work for building and home services companies earned a median of $23.11 an hour ($48,070 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $39,370 and $62,180 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.

Should a field supervisor still run a route?

Covering an open route now and then keeps skills sharp and stops from slipping. Running one every day leaves no time for audits, coaching or customer visits. If routes need cover all the time, hire a floater tech instead.

What safety rules does a pool field supervisor enforce?

Chemical handling first: under OSHA's hazard communication rule, workers exposed to hazardous chemicals need labels, safety data sheets and training. Then the load rules for chemicals on trucks, a latched gate at every stop, and power off at the breaker before anyone opens a pump or heater. Write each one into your audit checklist.

What experience should a pool field supervisor have?

The best candidates have run a route, done repairs, and then led others: a lead tech, a crew leader from another outdoor service trade, or a supervisor from a commercial pool company. The template's degree line allows equivalent experience, so years in the field can stand in for school.
