A pool service general manager runs a single branch: the weekly cleaning routes, the repair and equipment techs, the office and the customers they serve. The GM keeps visits on their scheduled day and callbacks low, settles complaints, and answers for revenue per service hour and profit.

A pool branch visits the same pools week after week, so small misses repeat, and the job site is a family's backyard.
Drive time decides revenue per hour
The template measures revenue per service hour, and the biggest leak is the time between stops. The GM decides which new customers to take, when a far-off account should move to another route or pay more, and when a route has grown too long for one tech. A single customer a few miles off the route can cost more each week than it brings in.
Callbacks have a few usual causes
Return trips tend to come from a short list: green or cloudy water after a storm or heat wave, a pump that loses prime after a repair, a heater that throws the same error again, or a skipped step on the visit. The GM reviews every callback each week by tech and cause, decides which are on the company and which are billable, and fixes the habit behind the repeats.
The backyard gate is a safety issue
CDC says more children ages 1 to 4 die from drowning than from any other cause, and it advises a four-sided pool fence with self-closing, self-latching gates. A tech who props a gate open or leaves it unlatched can undo that. The GM makes a gate check part of every visit and treats a missed latch as a serious failure, not a small complaint. Source: CDC: Preventing drowning.
The visit record settles disputes
Homeowners rarely see the tech. They see the water, the visit report and the bill. When a customer says nobody came, or the pool turned cloudy after a visit, the GM pulls the time stamp, the readings and the photo before calling back. A branch whose techs skip the photo or the readings loses those arguments, so the GM checks reports for gaps every week.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach
Hire for these
Has led technicians and office staff, ideally in a route business
Spots a weak route in the numbers and fixes it that week
Talks a homeowner down after a green pool or a missed visit
Pushes techs on quality and pace while keeping the good ones
Plans the week around weather, openings and repair backlogs
Teach these on the job
Water chemistry and the common causes of green or cloudy pools
How pumps, filters, heaters and automation fail
Opening and closing steps in your climate
Your price list for repairs, cleanups, openings and closings
How your route app logs visits, photos and callbacks
Most of the branch lives in its route app, whether that's Pool Brain, Skimmer or another: route maps, visit photos and readings, callbacks and billing. A short exercise in your own system during the final interview, such as finding the weakest route, shows whether a candidate can spot problems alone.
Pool service general manager interview questions
They have their own page: 6 questions that test this job, what strong and weak answers sound like, and a work exercise to run with your finalists.
Use this branch's last season as the starting point. Post the targets in the shop and talk through them with the lead technicians each Monday.
Customer Satisfaction Rating
New reviews and survey scores for the branch each week, sorted by route to find the cause of low ones. Keep a second list of every complaint escalated past the tech, with the date it closed.
Callback Rate
Count repeat trips to fix one problem inside a window you pick, and divide by all visits and repairs. Tag each one with a cause: water chemistry, a repair or a missed step.
Revenue per Service Hour
Branch revenue divided by technician hours on the clock, including drive time, by week and by route. Split weekly service from repairs, since a repair hour and a cleaning hour are priced very differently.
Operational Efficiency
For each route, stops booked against the stops one tech can finish in a day; for repairs, hours booked against repair tech hours available. Check it weekly, leaving room for storms and callbacks.

What does a pool service general manager do all day?
The morning starts at the route board: who is out, which stops moved, which repairs are waiting on parts. Then come callbacks, calls to unhappy customers, repair quotes to approve and yesterday's route numbers. The branch's operations manager, office staff and lead technicians report to the GM, who answers to the COO, or to the owner at a smaller company.
How much does a pool service general manager make?
General and operations managers who work for building and home services companies earned a median of $82,580 a year ($39.70 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $60,290 and $118,560 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and bonus terms.
Does a pool service GM need a contractor license?
Not always. Repair work at the branch may need a licensed person, and states set that rule differently. Arizona has a residential license class for pool service and minor repair. In Florida, a company doing licensed pool work qualifies through a licensed person. If that's its only licensed contractor and they leave, the company gets 60 days to replace them and can't do contracting work in the meantime, except that a temporary certificate can let it finish jobs already under way. Find out who holds the license and what happens if they quit.
How should a pool GM handle a customer whose pool turned green?
Get a tech there fast and test the water. If the company missed something, clean it up at no charge and retrain whoever missed it. If the cause was outside your control, explain what you found and quote the cleanup. Either way, call the customer after the next visit.
Should a pool branch have both a GM and a field supervisor?
Yes, once the branch has several routes and its own repair techs. A field supervisor works out on the routes: checking pools, riding with techs and fixing problems on the spot. The GM runs the whole branch, including sales, billing, the office, hiring and the profit and loss. In a small branch the GM covers supervision too, but quality checks slip when the office gets busy.
What goes in a pool service GM job ad?
Give the size of the branch: routes, techs, office staff and the services it sells. Say who the GM works for, what the bonus rewards, and what peak season and on-call weeks look like. If the GM also takes sales calls and writes repair quotes, put that in; some branches split those off.
