What makes pool service technician work different

A pool tech's customers judge the work every time they look out the back window, and the water shows a lapse within days.

  • Same pools, every week

A route tech may see the same backyard every Tuesday for years. Customers notice a skipped brushing or a full skimmer basket. Good techs keep notes on each pool: the gate code, the dog, the filter that clogs after storms. A photo at the end of each stop shows the work was done.

  • The weather moves the water

Sun and heat burn off chlorine, a pool party uses it up, and heavy rain waters the pool down and shifts the pH. A tech tests at every stop and doses to match. Miss a week in July and a clear pool can turn green, and the cleanup takes far longer than the visit that would have prevented it.

  • Chlorine and acid ride in the same truck

Liquid chlorine and muriatic acid are everyday chemicals on a route. CDC's pool chemical poster warns that chlorine products mixed with acid can release toxic gas. If a label calls for pre-dissolving, the chemical goes into the water, not the other way around, or it can react violently. Techs keep the two apart on the truck and at the pool. Source: CDC: Use pool chemicals safely (poster).

  • Cleaning and repairs fall under different rules

Rules vary by state. Florida, for one, doesn't require a license to clean a pool or treat its water, but installing, replacing, modifying or largely taking apart the built-in equipment that cleans or treats the water does. Know which jobs your route techs can do on their own and which must run under your contractor license. Source: Florida Statutes 489.105: pool/spa contractor definitions.

  • Every gate gets latched

Techs walk through backyard gates all day, often at homes with small children. CPSC's barrier guidelines call a gate that fails to close and latch completely the weak link in any pool fence. Make checking the latch the last step of every stop, and have techs report a gate that won't catch. Source: CPSC: Safety Barrier Guidelines for Residential Pools (Pub. 362).

How much pool service technicians make

The closest BLS group for pool service technicians is janitors and cleaners. Janitors and cleaners who work for building and home services companies earned a median of $17.21 an hour ($35,790 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s about the same as the $36,840 median for janitors and cleaners in all industries. About 829,300 of the 2,209,760 janitors and cleaners in that survey work for building services companies.

Pool servicers fall under the federal job code for janitors and cleaners, which mostly covers people who clean buildings, so this median may undersell a tech who also handles small repairs. The template quotes an hourly wage. Some companies pay per stop instead; overtime is still owed then, figured from the week's stop pay plus any bonuses and pay for other hours worked.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach

Hire for these

  • Shows up and finishes the route, week after week
  • Reads labels, measures doses and never guesses with chemicals
  • Can read a test kit and do simple dosing math
  • A valid driver's license, since the truck is the office
  • Tells a homeowner what changed in their pool since last week
  • Gets through a solo route without skipping steps

Teach these on the job

  • Your target ranges for pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness and stabilizer
  • Brushing, vacuuming and filter cleaning your way
  • Salt cell cleaning and quick pump and filter checks
  • Your route app, stop photos and service notes
  • Spotting leaks, noisy motors and other repair signs
  • Opening and winterizing steps, where pools freeze

Route techs carry a test kit or digital photometer, a telescoping pole with brush, leaf rake and vacuum head, and a truck carrying the chemicals for the day's stops. Most companies run routes from an app, Skimmer and Pool Brain being two, that keeps each stop's photos and readings. A tech who already knows Pentair, Hayward or Jandy pumps and salt systems needs less time riding along.

Pool service technician KPIs

The template's numbers are a first pass. Replace them with targets drawn from a few months of route records, and revisit them when the season turns.

On-site service completion rate
The share of scheduled stops the tech completes on their due day. Your route app counts completed and skipped stops; go over the skips weekly with their reasons, such as locked gates or storms.
Customer Satisfaction Rating
Survey ratings from customers on this tech's route, tracked month to month. A run of low scores from one day of the route often points to stops being rushed.
Callback Rate
Return trips to a pool this tech serviced, for a problem the visit should have fixed, such as cloudy water or a tripped pump. Tag each callback in your software with its cause.
Service Accuracy
Readings logged after dosing that land inside your company's target ranges. Spot-check by retesting a few pools behind the tech each month with a second kit.

Pool service technician FAQ

Does a pool service technician need a license?

That's a state question. In Connecticut, the licensed work is the plumbing, heating and electrical work on a pool, plus draining, acid washing and backwashing. A journeyperson (SP-2) may do that work only while employed by a licensed SP-1 contractor. The SP-2 takes a completed apprenticeship or a year of equivalent experience and training, plus CMS or CST certification or equivalent classes. Other states draw the line elsewhere; your state's contractor licensing office can tell you where.

How much does a pool service technician make?

Janitors and cleaners who work for building and home services companies earned a median of $17.21 an hour ($35,790 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $30,590 and $38,520 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.

Is a CPO certification required for a pool technician?

No federal rule requires it. State rules vary, and public pools can carry their own: Florida lets its health department require that a public pool be serviced by a certified pool service technician, and it accepts a nationally recognized course or a state pool contractor license. For a backyard route, CPO is one good sign that a tech has studied water chemistry and safety. PHTA's CMS and CST certificates are others, and Connecticut's license asks for one of those.

How many pools can a technician service in a day?

It depends on drive time, pool size and what each stop includes. Tight routes with small pools fit more stops. Big pools with spas, water features and salt systems take longer. Build routes from your software's stop times rather than a guess, and leave room for summer make-up visits.

How is a service tech different from a repair tech?

A service tech runs the weekly cleaning and chemistry route and handles small fixes like baskets, o-rings and gauges. A repair or lead tech finds and replaces failed pumps, motors, heaters, filters and controls. Many companies keep the jobs apart so routes stay on time: the route tech flags the problem, and the repair tech goes back.

Do pool technicians work in the winter?

In warm states, yes. Routes run all year, with less debris and lighter chemical use in the cool months. Where pools freeze, companies close most pools in fall, then keep techs busy with hot tub service, checks on covered pools, equipment repairs and shop work, or bring seasonal staff back in spring.
