A pool company grows by adding routes, so most of the CEO's big choices come down to which routes to own, what work the licenses allow, whether to take on community pools and how long each market's season runs.
Buy routes, or sell to a buyer
In March 2026, Pool & Spa News reported that SPS PoolCare had bought Pool Troopers, its largest deal yet, and wrote that consolidation of pool service "has reached a new level." A pool company CEO can grow by buying smaller operators' routes or plan for a sale to a larger buyer. Either way, the value sits in accounts that keep paying after the handoff, so the CEO watches cancellations and route density closely. Adding repairs can add a license
Cleaning and repair can fall under different rules. In Florida, cleaning a pool needs no license if it doesn't affect the structure or the equipment. Treating the water needs none either, as long as no equipment is put in or changed. Installing or replacing equipment, adding a heater, or draining most or all of a pool for repair is licensed contractor work. Before adding equipment jobs or a new state, the CEO checks where that state draws the line and who will hold the license. Source: Florida Statutes § 489.105: Definitions (pool/spa contractors).
Community pools follow public pool rules
Under federal pool safety law, pools at apartment complexes, housing developments and hotels count as public pools. Each needs anti-entrapment drain covers built to the standard named in the law. If a pool has one main drain that could be blocked, the law also requires at least one more safeguard. Two options are a safety vacuum release system and an automatic pump shut-off. HOA and apartment contracts can add steady revenue, but they bring rules a backyard route never deals with. The CEO decides whether that work fits the company. The map sets the calendar
Where the company grows decides what its year looks like. Pool Corporation's annual report says outdoor living in the southern U.S. stretches further through the year. For the northern half of the country, it notes that an early spring or late fall makes the pool season longer, and a late spring or early fall makes it shorter. A northern branch has to earn its year between opening and closing, so the CEO weighs each market by its season. Source: Pool Corporation: Form 10-K for 2025 (seasonality and weather).
Technicians can be trained from scratch
There is a formal route into the trade. The Pool & Hot Tub Alliance runs an apprenticeship registered with the federal Labor Department. It takes 2,000 hours of supervised job training, done within a year, plus at least 144 hours of online classes. Employers sponsor it. Whether to grow the field team this way, or keep hiring experienced techs away from competitors each spring, is the CEO's call. How much pool service chief executive officers make
The closest BLS group for pool service chief executive officers is chief executives. Chief executives who work for building and home services companies earned a median of $130,000 a year ($62.50 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s below the $213,990 median for chief executives in all industries. About 430 of the 204,350 chief executives in that survey work for building services companies.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach
Hire for these
Has bought, merged or opened locations and kept the customers through the change
Can judge what a route is worth from its density, cancellations and prices
Has led a team of senior managers across more than one location
Builds a budget around a short summer peak and slow winter months
Negotiates with distributors, lenders and large property managers
Teach these on the job
Water chemistry and the steps of a weekly visit
What your markets will pay for cleaning plans, repairs and openings
Which pool work needs a contractor license in your states
Public pool rules for HOA and apartment accounts
How a route tech's day runs, stop by stop
A pool CEO reads three things every month: the profit and loss by service line, a cash forecast that runs through winter, and the accounts gained and lost on each route, pulled from Skimmer, Pool Brain or whatever route software you use. In the final interview, hand candidates one month of those reports and ask what they would act on first.
Pool service chief executive officer interview questions
They have their own page: 6 questions that test this job, what strong and weak answers sound like, and a work exercise to run with your finalists.
Use the last two seasons in each market to pick each target. The owner or the board should see the results every quarter.
Service Contract Acquisition
Count new service contracts signed each quarter by type: weekly residential plans, HOA and apartment pools, and deals with builders or property managers. Note which ones renew or are still paying after their first season.
Customer Satisfaction Rating
The company-wide star average from every review site, read each month beside the cancellation list and the reasons customers give for leaving. A missed visit or a green pool usually shows up in both.
Revenue Growth
Compare each quarter's revenue with the year before, split into weekly service, repairs and equipment, and openings and closings. A cool spring can push revenue from one quarter into the next.
Profit Margin
Year-to-date net margin, refreshed each month from the books. Read it by service line, since flat-fee cleaning plans and equipment jobs earn money very differently.
Career path
Operations managerRuns routes and repairs in one market and learns what each costs.
General managerRuns a branch, from hiring techs to its profit.
Most of the CEO's time goes to choices that play out over years: which cities to enter, whose routes to buy, and whether to add repair work or bid on community pools. The CEO also hires the senior leaders, agrees the budget with the CFO, and keeps the bank, distributors and any investors informed. The COO, general managers and operations managers run the routes and repairs day to day.
How much does a pool service chief executive officer make?
Chief executives who work for building and home services companies earned a median of $130,000 a year ($62.50 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $102,340 and $208,630 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and bonus terms.
Is a pool company better off with a CEO or a general manager?
Look at where the owner's week goes. If it goes to deals, new markets, lenders and several branch leaders, a CEO can take that load. If customers are calling about missed stops and slow repairs, the gap is closer to the ground. Hire a general manager first. Many single-branch pool companies are better served by a strong GM and an owner who still sets direction.
Should a pool company buy other companies' routes?
Buying routes can add density quickly. Before you buy, look at each account's payment history, the condition of the pools and how close they sit to your current stops. Plan how customers will meet their new technician, keep the service the same at first, and track cancellations of bought accounts on their own for the first months.
How much water chemistry should a pool service CEO know?
Not well enough to run a route, but well enough to judge the work. The CEO should know why sanitizer, pH and stabilizer levels matter and what a green-pool cleanup costs. They should also see why chemical storage needs written rules. Chemistry problems drive callbacks and cancellations, so a CEO who can't follow that conversation will miss what is going wrong on the routes.
What should a pool service CEO job ad include?
Start with the company: markets, branches, service lines, and whether you do equipment work, openings and closings or community pools. Then the deal: whether a board sits above the CEO, how the bonus ties to profit and new contracts, and how much the owner will still decide. If a route purchase, a new market or a sale is planned, put it in the ad, since it shapes who applies.
