What makes pool service sales management different

A pool sales manager grows a route business and an equipment business at the same time. Every account a rep signs becomes a weekly stop for someone, so sales and the routes have to move together.

  • Aim the reps at neighborhoods with room

Each month the manager asks the operations manager which service days and neighborhoods have open slots, then sends reps, door hangers and online ads there first. Rep goals give extra credit for accounts on streets a route already covers, so no one hits a number by signing pools scattered across the county.

  • Raising prices on the accounts you have

Weekly service bills month after month, so a price change on the customers you already serve can matter as much as new sales. The manager and the owner pick the timing and size of any increase, sends the written notice the agreement calls for, and readies the CSR and rehash specialist for the cancel calls that follow. Check cancels by route afterward.

  • New owners come from builders and home sales

A family that just had a pool built, or just bought a house with one, needs service right away and hasn't picked a company yet. The manager gets to know local pool builders who don't run service routes, plus the real estate agents who sell homes with pools, and makes sure each referral's first visit happens on time. Track which partners send customers who stay.

  • Route techs see every pool every week

No one sees more equipment than the techs. They spot the pump that runs hot, the cracked filter and the heater that won't fire. The manager sets one simple way for techs to pass those leads, decides what they earn when one sells, and gives reps a deadline to call the owner. Pool parts are easy to buy online, so a slow callback often means the owner fixes it alone.

How much pool service sales managers make

Sales managers who work for building and home services companies earned a median of $99,910 a year ($48.04 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s below the $148,270 median for sales managers in all industries. About 1,470 of the 637,080 sales managers in that survey work for building services companies.

Salary, plus commission on new service contracts and a possible quarterly bonus, per the template. Decide before the offer whether accounts the manager signs personally earn commission too.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach

Hire for these

  • Has signed recurring service customers personally, in pools or another route trade
  • Reads margin and drive time by account, not just sales totals
  • Says no to discounts that would put a losing stop on a route
  • Turns each lost quote into a lesson the next rep can use
  • Checks route room with operations before pushing a sales drive

Teach these on the job

  • What you pay your distributor for pumps, heaters and automation
  • Your pool service software's sales and route reports
  • Your agreement terms and renewal process
  • Any salesperson registration your state requires
  • Your tech lead program and commission plan

The manager lives in route maps, account margin reports, open quotes and renewal lists in your pool software or CRM. Applicants will ask whether reps quote weekly service from a fixed rate card or price each pool on site, so have the answer ready.

Pool service sales manager KPIs

Start from the matching quarter a year ago, then adjust for route room. When routes are full, a high contract goal just creates stops no one can service.

New Maintenance Contracts
Weekly service agreements signed in the quarter that reached a first visit, by rep and by route area. Subtract the ones that cancel before their first few visits.
Quarterly Revenue
Revenue billed on maintenance contracts in the quarter, from your accounting or pool service software. Split it into new and existing accounts, so a price increase isn't mistaken for growth.
Sales Conversion Rate
Signed agreements divided by quotes given, for the team, each rep and each lead source. Leave out quotes for pools outside your service area, since those were never winnable.
Customer Satisfaction Rating
Ratings from customers signed in the quarter, surveyed a few weeks into service. If comments say the service day or the tasks differ from what the rep described, look at the sales pitch.

Career path

  1. Pool technicianWorks a weekly list of pools and gets to know the equipment and customers.
  2. Sales representativeSigns new route customers and quotes equipment upgrades.
  3. Sales managerLeads the reps, pricing and renewals.
  4. General managerAnswers to the owner for every department, from routes to the front desk.

Pool service sales manager FAQ

How do a pool sales manager and operations manager split the work?

Sales owns new accounts, pricing and the agreement. Operations owns the routes, the techs and the quality of each visit. The two talk every week about route room: where new accounts fit, which days are full, and how far out equipment installs are booking. When a new customer complains in the first month, both look at whether the sale or the service went wrong.

How much does a pool service sales manager make?

Sales managers who work for building and home services companies earned a median of $99,910 a year ($48.04 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $73,930 and $143,320 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and bonus terms.

What should a pool sales manager do about canceled accounts?

Track every cancel with a reason, by rep, route and month. A cluster on one route points at service. A cluster from one rep points at what was promised. If winter cancels are about price, a lighter winter plan may keep some of them. Give the list to the rehash specialist for win-back calls, and fix the cause before spending more on new leads.

Does a pool sales manager need pool service experience?

Yes, ideally. A manager who has run a route can tell how many minutes a stop eats and which kinds of pools lose money at a flat weekly price. Without that, prices drift too low. Someone who led sales at another route-based company, such as a lawn or pest service, can learn it by riding with techs in the first months.

How should commission be set up for weekly service accounts?

Reward accounts that stay, not just accounts signed. One setup pays once an account has been serviced for a set number of weeks. Another spreads a smaller commission over several months of billing. Equipment commission can wait until the install is finished and the invoice is collected. Write down what happens when an account cancels early, before the first rep asks.
