A weatherproofing sales manager runs the reps who sell air sealing, insulation and moisture barrier work at homeowners' kitchen tables. They set the price book and sales materials, coach reps on reading attics and crawl spaces, and keep proposals in line with federal insulation rules and local rebate programs.

What makes weatherproofing sales management different
A sales manager anywhere hires, coaches and forecasts. In weatherproofing, a federal insulation rule reaches the pitch book, rebate programs shape the packages, and the age of the house changes the sale.
No per-inch R-values in the pitch book
The FTC's insulation rule bars per-inch R-values in promotional materials, including labels, fact sheets and ads. It's allowed only when tests prove the figure holds steady at greater thickness, or as a range that says how much it drops, with a set statement. Spray foam and rigid board pitches often lean on per-inch numbers, so review every slide, leave-behind and proposal template before reps use it. Source: eCFR: 16 CFR Part 460, Labeling and Advertising of Home Insulation (FTC R-value Rule).
Utah rebate rules shape the packages
In Utah, Enbridge Gas's ThermWise rebates say the final attic insulation must land between R-49 and R-60. Insulation, air sealing and duct work generally need a ThermWise authorized contractor, but attic, wall and floor insulation can be self-installed and still qualify. Build Utah attic packages that finish in that range, and expect some homeowners to price your job against doing it themselves. Source: Enbridge Gas Utah: ThermWise weatherization rebates.
Older homes and newer homes sell differently
An older house may have empty wall cavities, knee walls and little attic insulation, so the sale is often a whole-house plan. A newer house may need only a topped-off attic and a sealed hatch and top plates, so the sale is smaller and quicker. Give reps a pitch and a price book section for each, and teach them to tell which house they're in.
Decide whether the test comes first
Some companies run a blower door test on the first visit so the rep sells from real numbers. Others send an auditor first and the rep second. A test-first visit takes longer and needs trained reps and working gear, but it shows the homeowner proof of the leaks. Pick one model, price the visit to match, and keep the test setup the same for every rep.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach
Hire for these
Coaching reps from ride-alongs and lost proposals
A working grasp of attics, crawl spaces and air leakage testing
Building a price book by service and job size
Reading CRM reports by rep, lead source and service
Hiring and training in-home sales reps
Teach these on the job
Your rebate programs and their paperwork
FTC insulation rules for ads and sales materials
Your CRM and estimating software
How your crews schedule and what they can install in a day
Expect a CRM with dashboards by rep and service, estimating software that pulls from the price book, and the blower door and infrared camera your reps carry. The manager should run each one well enough to coach a new rep.
Weatherproofing sales manager interview questions
Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.
Situational · Stopping overselling
A rep keeps selling full-house packages to homeowners who only needed a few leaks fixed. What do you do?
A strong answer: Reviews the deals, rides along, coaches on matching the fix to the problem, sets clear standards, and follows up on complaints or cancellations.
Behavioral · Hiring reps who explain clearly
Tell me about a rep you hired who could explain an invisible service, like air sealing, in plain words. How did you spot that skill during hiring?
A strong answer: Names the signal, such as how the person explained something technical in a role-play or asked good questions, and how they've hired since.
These goals come from a template. Reset them each year from your own close rates, average job size and the number of reps you can keep busy.
Monthly revenue target
Total contract value the team signs each month, net of cancellations in the cooling-off period. Pull it from the CRM and match it to the bookkeeper's sales report.
Lead conversion rate
Sold jobs divided by qualified leads that got an in-home visit, by rep and by service. Use the qualified definition agreed with marketing so both teams count the same leads.
Customer Satisfaction Rating
Average post-job rating on jobs each rep sold, from your survey or review tool. Read the low ones for sales causes, such as a scope the homeowner didn't understand.
Sales team performance
Each rep's sold revenue against their quarterly target, then how many reps hit it. Spend coaching time on the reps below target first.
Career path
Sales representativeRuns in-home tests and estimates and closes weatherproofing jobs.
Senior sales representativeTakes the larger homes and trains new reps in the field.
Sales managerRuns the sales team, the price book and lead routing.
General managerLeads every department in one market and reports to the COO.
How much field time does a weatherproofing sales manager need?
A good share of the week. The template's lines on travel, standing and lifting up to 20 pounds cover driving between homes and job sites, riding along on appointments, standing through home show and trade show shifts, and carrying displays and sample boards. The template also mentions some evening and weekend meetings, so plan for them.
How much does a weatherproofing sales manager make?
Sales managers who work for building finishing contractors earned a median of $124,650 a year ($59.93 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $83,970 and $153,740 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and bonus terms.
When should a sales manager tell a rep to walk away from a weatherproofing sale?
When the job can't be done right yet. Examples include an active roof leak or wet attic sheathing, a crawl space with standing water and no plan for its source, mold the homeowner won't deal with, or a homeowner who refuses the safety items the audit found. Write down what has to change, and pass the file to rehash with a date to check back.
Can reps quote a job from homeowner photos?
For small, simple work, maybe, such as topping off an open attic the homeowner photographs with a tape measure standing in the insulation. For air sealing, crawl spaces or anything with hidden moisture, a photo misses too much. Quote those in person, or make a photo quote subject to a site check, and say so in writing.
What should reps say to a homeowner who plans to insulate the attic alone?
Respect it, then point to the parts that are hard to do well from a ladder: sealing top plates, chases and light boxes, keeping soffit vents open with baffles, and keeping insulation clear of flues and chimneys. Offer an air sealing job priced on its own, and leave the blowing to them if they insist.
