A weatherproofing sales representative visits homes, checks the attic, crawl space and walls, and turns what they find into a priced plan for air sealing, insulation and moisture barriers. They explain the work in plain terms, show the insulation fact sheet before the homeowner signs, and close the job.

Every in-home rep runs a visit and writes a proposal. In weatherproofing, a federal rule sets what the rep shows before the sale, and crawl space work has code steps to price.
Show the fact sheet before they buy
Federal insulation rules make an installer keep fact sheets for each insulation it sells and show the homeowner the sheet for the chosen type before the sale is agreed. Carry a binder or a digital copy for every product you offer, and walk the homeowner through it before the contract comes out. Source: eCFR: 16 CFR 460.15, How installers must handle fact sheets (FTC R-value Rule).
A sealed crawl space has code steps
In Utah, for example, the state's adopted 2021 IRC requires an unvented crawl space to have a continuous Class I vapor retarder over the exposed earth, with joints overlapped 6 inches and sealed or taped, and edges run at least 6 inches up the stem wall and sealed to it or its insulation. It also needs one way to move or dry the air, such as continuous exhaust, a conditioned air supply or a dehumidifier. Price all of it, not just the liner. Source: UpCodes: Utah Residential Code 2021, Section R408.3 Unvented crawl space.
Make the hidden work visible
Air sealing ends up under insulation, where the homeowner will never see it. Photograph each leak you plan to seal, such as open wall tops, plumbing chases and gaps around light boxes, and list them on the proposal. The homeowner sees what they're paying for, and the crew gets a map.
Walls take holes and patches
Insulating closed walls means drilling holes from outside or inside, filling each cavity and plugging the holes. Tell the homeowner where the holes go, what happens to siding or plaster, and who paints. Look for blocked cavities that need extra holes, and write the patch work into the proposal so nothing surprises anyone.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach
Hire for these
Willing to enter attics and crawl spaces on most visits
Explains air leaks and insulation in plain words
Takes measurements and notes a crew can install from
Asks questions before pitching
Closes without pressure tactics
Teach these on the job
Blower door and infrared camera use
Crawl space liner and vapor retarder details
The FTC R-value Rule and your fact sheets
Your estimating app and price book
Rebate program paperwork
Reps carry a tablet with the estimating app and CRM, a flashlight, a ruler for insulation depth, a moisture meter and often an infrared camera. Some companies also send a blower door and pressure gauge on the sales visit.
Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.
Situational · Recommending the right fix
A homeowner wants a leaking window caulked, but you can see the water is coming from a roof-to-wall joint above it. What do you do?
A strong answer: Shows the homeowner, explains the real source, recommends the right fix or refers it if the company doesn't do it, and doesn't sell caulking that won't help.
Behavioral · Learning from losses
Tell me about a sealing or waterproofing job you lost that taught you something.
A strong answer: Gives a real example, what they did wrong or missed, and what they do differently now.
Read the template's goals as examples. Base your own on what reps in your market sell in a normal month and in the busy season.
Revenue per month
Signed contract value each month on the rep's own deals, net of cancellations. Count jobs on the contract date, not the install date.
Customer Satisfaction Rating
Average rating from post-job surveys on jobs the rep sold. Check comments on low scores to see whether the proposal set the wrong expectations.
Deal Closure Rate
Signed contracts divided by proposals presented, from the CRM. Track it by service, since attic and crawl space proposals close differently.
Number of New Leads Generated
Leads the rep found, such as referrals and neighbor requests near job sites, entered in the CRM with the rep as the source. Company-supplied leads don't count here.
Does a weatherproofing sales rep go into the attic?
Yes, on most visits. The template's lines on walking, standing, outdoor work and lifting up to 25 pounds cover climbing a ladder to the attic hatch, stepping across joists with a flashlight, looking into crawl spaces, circling the house outdoors whatever the weather, and carrying a ladder, test gear or sample cases. Put this in the ad so applicants expect a hands-on visit.
How much does a weatherproofing sales representative make?
Sales representatives of services who work for building finishing contractors earned a median of $31.25 an hour ($64,990 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $48,330 and $89,990 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.
What should a rep do when the attic hatch is blocked or sealed?
Ask before opening it. Hatches get painted shut, hidden in closets or buried under stored boxes. If you can't get in without damage, write that down, photograph what you can see, and price only what you saw, with a site check before the crew starts. Never guess at an attic you haven't seen.
How long should a weatherproofing estimate visit take?
Long enough to see every area you'll quote and talk through the plan. A quick attic top-off is short. A whole-house visit with a test, a crawl space check and a walk around the outside takes much longer. Give the homeowner a time estimate when you book so they can set the time aside.
What should a weatherproofing proposal show?
Each area by name, with the material, the depth and the R-value, the leaks to be sealed with photos, any baffles, hatch insulation or vapor retarder, and the price for each part. Note that the homeowner saw the fact sheet. A proposal the crew can follow without calling the rep is a good one.
Which past jobs prepare someone for weatherproofing sales?
Insulation or HVAC installers, energy auditors and home inspectors already know attics and crawl spaces and mostly need sales training. In-home sellers from roofing, windows or solar know the kitchen-table close and need to learn how houses lose heat. Hire for curiosity about how houses leak, and teach whichever half is missing.
