What a carpet cleaning helper learns first

A helper's first weeks are setup and carrying. By the end of a season, a good one can run every step of a carpet job while the tech watches.

  • The truck mount comes before the wand

Before cleaning anything, the helper learns the machine: connecting hoses, starting it in the order the maker's manual gives, reading the heat and vacuum gauges, and shutting down and flushing it before the van heads home. Teach what normal readings look like on your machines, and have the helper tell the tech as soon as one changes mid-job.

  • Hose is the helper's job

The helper lays out the solution and vacuum hoses before the tech walks in, keeps the vacuum hose free of kinks, and keeps the hot solution line out of walkways. Where hose crosses a sidewalk or a shared hallway, they mark it so neighbors don't trip. At the end, each hose gets coiled without twists and its quick-connects checked for drips.

  • Before photos come first

While the tech walks the job with the customer, the helper takes before photos of each room: stains, worn lanes, nicked baseboards and how the furniture sits. Those photos back up the tech's notes if a question comes up later. If your process includes pre-vacuuming, the helper does it now, before the wand goes down.

  • Moving furniture has rules

Helpers move most of the furniture, so teach your list before their first job: what two people move, what stays put, such as pianos, beds and loaded china cabinets, and what the customer moves, like electronics and breakables. Slide heavy pieces on sliders instead of dragging them, and put each one back where the before photos show it was.

How much carpet cleaning helpers make

The closest BLS group for carpet cleaning helpers is janitors and cleaners. Janitors and cleaners who work for building and home services companies earned a median of $17.21 an hour ($35,790 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s about the same as the $36,840 median for janitors and cleaners in all industries. About 829,300 of the 2,209,760 janitors and cleaners in that survey work for building services companies.

Hourly, with health, dental, vision and a retirement plan, as the template lists. BLS counts helpers with janitors and building cleaners, the group carpet cleaners fall in, so the median here includes experienced techs and a helper starts below it. Check your state's minimum before using the template's range.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach

Hire for these

  • At the shop on time every morning the vans roll
  • Follows a set routine and asks before guessing
  • Moves furniture with care, and with a partner when it's heavy
  • Polite and brief with customers, sending price questions to the tech
  • Holds a driver's license, when helpers take the wheel

Teach these on the job

  • Truck-mount start-up, gauges and shut-down
  • Hose layout, coiling and quick-connect checks
  • Before photos, and pre-vacuuming if you do it
  • Your furniture moving list
  • Chemical labels and the van's safety data sheet binder

A helper works with the van's hoses and reels, an upright vacuum, furniture sliders and blocks, corner guards, a phone for before photos, and a hand truck for the portable. Say in the ad whether helpers drive and about how long before a helper runs a van alone.

Carpet cleaning helper interview questions

Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.

  1. Situational · Protecting pets and the home

You're running hose from the truck into a house. The customer wants the front door closed because their cat might get out. What do you do?

A strong answer: Tells the technician, asks the customer to put the cat in a closed room or uses a door seal around the hose, and checks the door won't pinch the hose or scratch the frame.

  2. Behavioral · Learning equipment

Tell me about a time at work, school or volunteering when you had to learn a new tool or machine quickly.

A strong answer: Asked to be shown, practiced carefully, asked questions, and can explain what they learned.

Carpet cleaning helper KPIs

The tech a helper rides with sees every job. Have them score these weekly for the first months, then reset the targets after a season.

Efficiency in setup and cleanup
Minutes from parking to hose at the door, and from the last pass to pulling away, from job clock times. Compare them with the same tech working alone.
Equipment readiness
Mornings the van left with hoses, wands, vacuum, sliders and blocks loaded and the machine test-started in the yard. The tech notes anything missing.
Positive customer interaction
Survey comments on jobs the helper worked: care with furniture, clean floors at the door, polite answers. Read them together with the tech each month.
Safety protocol adherence
Spot checks on ride-alongs: hose marked where people walk, heavy lifts shared, gloves and labels used with chemicals. A helper who reports a close call is doing the job right.

Career path

Carpet cleaning helper FAQ

Does the template's hourly range meet every state's minimum?

No. The Labor Department's state table, current as of July 1, 2026, lists 22 states and the District of Columbia with a basic minimum above the bottom of the template's range, and 11 states plus DC above its top. New York and Oregon set different rates by area, and some cities and counties set rates above their state's. Look up your state and city before you post the job, and set the bottom of the range no lower than the rate that applies.

How much does a carpet cleaning helper make?

Janitors and cleaners who work for building and home services companies earned a median of $17.21 an hour ($35,790 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $30,590 and $38,520 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.

What should a helper show before getting their own van?

A full home job start to finish with the tech only watching: start-up, mixing to the label, every pass and the final grooming. A walk-through where they tell the customer what may not come out. A clean shut-down and van check at day's end. And, if they'll drive, a motor vehicle record your auto insurer accepts, checked by HR. Set the timeline yourself and tell each helper what it is.

Can a carpet cleaning helper be under 18?

Possibly. For anyone under 18, federal rules limit the carpet cleaning tasks they may do and any driving for work; the carpet cleaning HR manager's page sets those out. Your state may add limits of its own: the Labor Department notes that when a state's child labor law is the more restrictive one, that law applies. Check both before you plan a minor's first week.

What physical work does a carpet cleaning helper do?

The template's lifting and weather lines come down to moving dining chairs and end tables out of each room and back, setting heavy pieces on blocks, pulling hose up stairs, and coiling it at the van in rain, heat or snow. Describe that work in the ad and tell applicants accommodation is available.
