A carpet cleaning field supervisor checks the work of every tech in a branch: inspecting finished jobs, riding along where the numbers point, and going out on re-cleans to learn why a spot or a complaint came back. They also walk commercial accounts with the building contact after the night crew has cleaned.

In carpet cleaning, the van is gone before the result is final. Carpet takes time to dry, and an office floor is judged the next morning by people who never saw the crew.
Check wet, and check again dry
A finished room looks its best while it's damp and the pile is groomed. Have the supervisor check some jobs at wrap-up, looking at edges, traffic lanes, stairs and furniture blocks. Give others a second look a day or two later, by visit, photo or call, once the carpet has dried. Score the dry check too, so a spot that shows up while the carpet dries counts against the job.
Every re-clean gets one cause
The office books the return visit. The supervisor goes along, or reads the tech's notes and before photos, and records one cause: a spot that wicked back up from below, residue left in the pile, an area that was missed, or a stain that was noted before the job started. Read the list monthly. It shows which techs need coaching and which problems came from the carpet, not the work.
Ride-alongs follow the numbers
Rather than riding with each tech in turn, the supervisor picks ride-alongs from the cause list and the ratings: the tech with three wicking re-cleans this month, the one just starting upholstery, or the van a commercial account complained about. Each ride-along ends with one or two things to fix and a date to check them again, so coaching shows up in the next month's numbers.
Night work is judged in the morning
On a commercial account, the first person to judge last night's cleaning is the building contact. The supervisor sets a regular walk-through with each contact during business hours. They compare what was cleaned with the contract's list for that visit and look for damp spots, furniture left out of place and missed entrances. The night crew hears the results before its next shift.
How much carpet cleaning field supervisors make
The closest BLS group for carpet cleaning field supervisors is First-Line supervisors of housekeeping and janitorial workers. First-Line supervisors of housekeeping and janitorial workers who work for building and home services companies earned a median of $23.11 an hour ($48,070 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s about the same as the $49,100 median for First-Line supervisors of housekeeping and janitorial workers in all industries. About 66,480 of the 178,760 First-Line supervisors of housekeeping and janitorial workers in that survey work for building services companies.
A salary with a yearly performance bonus, per the template. BLS counts this role with supervisors of janitors and housekeepers. A bonus built on fewer re-cleans and finished training sign-offs rewards the supervisor's own work; ratings alone also reflect the tech, the carpet and the price.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach
Hire for these
Years of carpet, upholstery and tile cleaning, enough to redo any job they inspect
Can tell a wicking spot from a missed one or an old stain
Coaches a tech on one or two fixes without taking over the wand
Stays calm and plain at a customer's door after a complaint
Writes inspection notes and re-clean causes the same day
Teach these on the job
Your inspection checklists for homes and for commercial accounts
Each account's contract list of areas and visit types
Your re-clean cause list and how it drives coaching
IICRC inspection or commercial maintenance courses, if you sponsor them
The photos, notes and ratings screens in your scheduling app
The supervisor works from a phone with the scheduling app's job notes and photos, a moisture meter, a flashlight held low across the pile to show missed lanes, and a small spot kit for fixes on site. Tell candidates how many vans and commercial accounts they'd cover and how much of the day is driving.
Carpet cleaning field supervisor interview questions
Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.
Situational · Damage investigations
A customer says a technician bleached a spot in their carpet. What do you do?
A strong answer: Visits and inspects, checks whether it's color loss or a stain, reviews the work order and products with the tech, documents with photos, and explains the options such as spot dyeing or repair.
Behavioral · Winning back customers
Tell me about a time you turned a carpet or upholstery complaint into a repeat customer.
A strong answer: Explains how they fixed it (a re-clean, honest talk about what was possible), what they communicated, and that the customer booked again.
Read these by tech and by type of account. Homes and commercial buildings score differently, so base each target on a season of your own inspection results.
Customer Satisfaction Rating
Ratings for every tech the supervisor covers, read alongside the written comments. Compare each tech's scores before and after a ride-along to see whether the coaching took.
Compliance with Cleaning Standards
Of the jobs inspected, how many passed your checklist clean. Inspect some jobs nobody flagged, not only complaint jobs, so the rate isn't skewed, and record the cause of every fail.
Issue Resolution Time
Clock it from the moment a complaint reaches the office to the day the customer accepts the fix, with the supervisor's first visit or call logged in between. Track home re-cleans and commercial complaints apart.
Staff Training Compliance
Techs who finished the training due this quarter, such as safety training on a new product, a service sign-off or a course, out of all techs who had training due.
Career path
Lead technicianAlready checks a trainee's work before the van pulls away.
Field supervisorInspects jobs, picks ride-alongs and runs down every re-clean.
Which certification fits a carpet cleaning field supervisor?
The template prefers a certificate from a recognized cleaning institution. IICRC's Senior Carpet Inspector suits someone who settles complaints: it covers inspection techniques, field and lab testing, report writing and warranty interpretation. It asks for the Carpet Cleaning Technician or Commercial Carpet Maintenance Technician certificate, plus Carpet Repair and Reinstallation Technician, first. For a supervisor over commercial crews, the commercial maintenance course has no prerequisites and centers on the S100 standard and on daily, interim and deep cleaning.
How much does a carpet cleaning field supervisor make?
First-Line supervisors of housekeeping and janitorial workers who work for building and home services companies earned a median of $23.11 an hour ($48,070 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $39,370 and $62,180 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.
Does a carpet cleaning field supervisor work nights?
Not under this template, which sets weekday hours from 9 to 5 with an occasional weekend. Night crews get checked during the day. If you want the supervisor to drop in on night jobs now and then, say how often in the ad and the offer letter, and settle how those hours are paid before the first one.
Can a lead technician do this job instead?
With a few vans, often yes, part time. As the branch grows, two things break. The lead's own jobs go unchecked, and re-cleans pile up waiting for someone free to visit. A sign it's time for a supervisor is when re-clean visits wait for the next open day on the lead's van.
Why does a field supervisor need to lift anything?
The template's 50-pound and weather lines stand for real tasks here: pulling back a carpet corner to check the pad on a complaint, carrying a meter and spot kit up to an office floor, and walking a building's entrances in snow to judge the walk-off areas. Spell out those tasks for applicants and note that you'll make reasonable accommodations.
