A carpet cleaning operations manager gets the vans out each morning and back each night: routes, tech assignments, machines that run, and dirty water that ends up where it should. When a job overruns or a machine dies, they rework the day so customers still get served.

What a carpet cleaning operations manager runs each day
Every van is a rolling cleaning plant. If it leaves loaded, fueled and working, the route usually holds. The operations manager's day goes into making that happen, and fixing it fast when it doesn't.
Jobs don't come in one size
A two-room refresh and a whole-house pet job with a sectional can land on the same morning. The operations manager checks room counts and job notes before routes go out, groups stops by area, and sends tile and grout, rug or upholstery work to techs trained for it. Build each route from the job notes, not from an average job time.
Dirty water has to go somewhere legal
Each truck mount fills a waste tank with dirty rinse water, and local rules decide where it goes. Pinole, California, for example, says it's illegal to let anything but rainwater into a storm drain. Carpet cleaners there need any permit the sanitary district requires, plus the property owner's okay, before emptying into a building's sewer plumbing. The operations manager sets where each van empties, city by city. Source: City of Pinole, California: Wash water disposal practices for carpet cleaners.
Downtime gets prevented the night before
A truck mount that won't start at 7:30 can wipe out that van's whole day of jobs. The operations manager has techs log engine hours, oil, filters and hose wear at the end of each day, books service before the busy weeks, and keeps a portable extractor ready so one broken van doesn't empty a schedule.
Flood calls break into the day
Soaked carpet can't wait for tomorrow's open slot. The operations manager runs the on-call list, decides which route gives up a van when a water call comes in, and calls the customers who get moved. They also make sure that van carries extra hose, a water claw or wand, and air movers before it heads out.
How much carpet cleaning operations managers make
The closest BLS group for carpet cleaning operations managers is general and operations managers. General and operations managers who work for building and home services companies earned a median of $82,580 a year ($39.70 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s below the $105,770 median for general and operations managers in all industries. About 74,770 of the 3,503,020 general and operations managers in that survey work for building services companies.
Salary with a yearly bonus, often tied to machine downtime, jobs finished on time and customer ratings.

BLS doesn’t publish pay for carpet cleaning companies on their own. These figures cover services to buildings and dwellings, which include them. Post a real range for your market in the ad.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach
Hire for these
Builds daily routes that survive one job running long
Knows truck-mount upkeep well enough to tell a quick fix from a shop visit
Matches each job to a tech's skills: carpet, upholstery, rugs, tile
Calls customers before their window when a job runs late
Leads techs and field supervisors from the yard, not only the desk
Teach these on the job
Your routing and scheduling software
Wastewater rules in each city you serve
Your truck-mount maker's service schedule
Key, alarm and access steps for commercial accounts
Your flood call checklist
The operations manager works from the scheduling and routing software, a GPS view of the vans, a maintenance log for every machine and a list of approved places to empty waste tanks in each city. The ad should give the van and tech count, the morning start time, and whether the role covers the on-call water rotation.
Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.
Situational · Productivity gaps
One technician takes much longer per room than everyone else. What do you do?
A strong answer: Looks at their job mix and quality, rides along, checks equipment, coaches on technique, and sets a goal with follow-up.
Behavioral · On-time arrival
Tell me about a time you improved on-time arrival for a field team.
A strong answer: Names the causes (underbooked jobs, late starts from the shop, poor routing), the changes, and the before-and-after on-time rate.
The template's targets assume an average job. Set yours from your own mix, since a commercial night job and a pet-damaged home won't fit the same clock.
Customer Satisfaction Rating
Average rating on jobs done by the techs this role schedules, read weekly. Follow up on every low score within a day and note whether the cause was the route, the tech or the machine.
Equipment Downtime
Hours a van or truck mount was out of service during booked time, against total booked time. Track each machine on its own so one bad unit stands out.
Operational Efficiency
Billed hours against paid tech hours. Driving, waiting at the shop and trips to empty waste tanks all pull it down.
Service Delivery Time
Average time from arrival to wrap-up, by service type. Compare carpet-only jobs with each other; upholstery, rug and tile jobs run on their own clocks.
Career path
Lead technicianKnows every service and can fix a machine at the curb.
Field supervisorRides with techs, inspects finished jobs and coaches.

What does the 50-pound line mean for a carpet cleaning operations manager?
The template's lines read "Ability to lift and move equipment up to 50 lbs." and "Comfortable working in various weather conditions." Here that means loading a portable extractor, carrying hose reels, swapping a part on a truck mount, helping a tech move a heavy chair, and checking vans in the yard on cold or hot mornings. If the job you're filling leaves those tasks to others, trim the lines and add an accommodation statement.
How much does a carpet cleaning operations manager make?
General and operations managers who work for building and home services companies earned a median of $82,580 a year ($39.70 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $60,290 and $118,560 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and bonus terms.
Can carpet cleaners empty waste water into a septic system?
Check local rules first, and expect a no. Stormwater guidance for carpet and upholstery cleaners in the Albuquerque area says never to put wastewater into a septic system, because the chemicals could make it fail. If a home is on septic, plan before the van leaves: an approved dump site on the way back, or a tank brought home full. Some places go further. Rancho Santa Margarita, California, names zero discharge or closed-loop recycled water as its preferred option.
What should happen when a truck mount breaks down mid-route?
The tech calls in right away with what failed. The operations manager decides within minutes whether a portable unit can finish the job, another van can take the next stops, or customers need new times. Call those customers before their window starts. Then log the failure, so repeat problems with one machine show up before the busy season.
How should a carpet cleaning operations manager set up a commercial night job?
Get keys, alarm codes and a contact who answers at night before the day of the job. Send techs trained in the method the contract calls for, with signs and air movers so the carpet can dry before morning. Check that the van can park away from doors and air intakes, and find out where inside the building the tank can be emptied with the owner's okay. Have the tech send photos at the end, so problems surface before staff arrive.
