What changes for a sales manager at a gutter company

Many gutter and guard sales close in the home, with discounts, free add-ons and referral deals in play. The sales manager writes those rules and answers for them.

  • A discount needs a real starting price

A same-day guard discount only means something if the higher price was real. Under the FTC's guide on former price comparisons, the higher number should be a genuine price that customers were actually offered, regularly, for a reasonably substantial period. A list price set high so reps can knock it down makes the bargain a false one. Keep a price book and approve every discount against it. Source: eCFR: 16 CFR 233.1, former price comparisons.

  • Free means the rest stays at the regular price

Offers like free downspout extensions with a full system, or free guards on the back of the house, carry a promise. Under the FTC's guide, a buyer told an item is free pays nothing for it and no more than the regular price for what they do buy. If the system price creeps up to cover the free item, the offer misleads. Source: eCFR: 16 CFR 251.1, use of the word free.

  • Referral payments need records

Roofers, painters and past customers send gutter and guard leads. If you pay for them, track each payment by person. For payments made in 2026, the IRS puts the Form 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC reporting line at 2,000 dollars a year, up from 600, so get the payee's tax details before the first check and let the bookkeeper sort out which ones need a form. Source: IRS: Form 1099-NEC and independent contractors.

  • Forecast by season and product

Fall brings guard sales, spring brings replacement work, and winter in Iowa and Indiana slows installs. Build the monthly forecast the template asks for by product line and by season, check it against the weeks the crews already have booked, and tell the executive team early when a wet spring or a late leaf drop moves the numbers.

  • Builder accounts need their own rules

A builder buys gutters by the plan, on the builder's schedule, often at a set price per house. Decide who owns each builder account, how plan changes get priced, and whether a rep may offer guards to the buyer after closing. Without those rules, the builder rep and the retail reps end up chasing the same houses.

How much gutter sales managers make

Sales managers who work for foundation, structure, and building exterior contractors earned a median of $107,500 a year ($51.68 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s below the $148,270 median for sales managers in all industries. About 1,380 of the 637,080 sales managers in that survey work for structure and exterior contractors.

A base salary plus commission on team sales, with bonuses the template pays only when customer scores and install quality meet the standard. That ties the manager's pay to what happens after the crew leaves.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach

Hire for these

  • Has run ride-alongs and role-plays for in-home reps
  • Reads a gutter estimate and spots a missed outlet, miter or downspout
  • Sets discount and promotion rules and holds reps to them
  • Builds a forecast by season and product line
  • Calms an upset homeowner or builder without giving away margin

Teach these on the job

  • Your guard brands, warranty wording and price book
  • Your CRM's pipeline stages and reports
  • Local builders and who buys for them
  • How your crews schedule and what slows an install
  • Referral tracking and the paperwork the bookkeeper needs

A CRM such as Salesforce with pipeline reports, the reps' measuring and estimating tools, and an e-signature proposal system. Ask for read access to the install calendar too, so the dates reps promise match open crew time.

Gutter sales manager interview questions

Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.

  1. Situational · Correcting guard overselling

Customers complain that reps told them guards mean they'll never clean their gutters again. What do you do?

A strong answer: Reviews the claims, calls affected customers, corrects the message to match the warranty, coaches or disciplines reps and checks whether pay rewards overselling.

  2. Behavioral · Coaching reps

Tell me about a rep you coached to sell guards and gutters honestly and still hit target.

A strong answer: A specific behavior they changed, such as showing the warranty terms, and results that held up without complaints.

Gutter sales manager KPIs

These targets come from the template. Set the real ones from your own past seasons, and measure guards apart from gutters.

Sales revenue growth
Signed revenue this year against the same months last year, split by guards, gutters and builder work, so a strong fall doesn't hide a weak spring.
Conversion rate
Signed contracts divided by estimates run, by rep and by lead source. Count rehashed sales on their own line to see what reps close on the first visit.
Customer satisfaction (CSAT)
Post-install survey scores sorted by selling rep. Low scores on one rep's jobs often trace back to promises made at the table.
Callbacks due to installation issues
Callbacks per installed job, each tagged by cause. Put the ones a sale caused, such as a wrong size, a missing outlet or a guard sold for the wrong debris, on the sales side.
Sales representative turnover rate
Reps who quit or were let go this year, as a share of the average number on the team. Note why each one left and how long they stayed.
30/60/90-day ramp expectations
Check each checkpoint against a written plan agreed in the first week, covering ride-alongs, proposals approved and team conversion, and allow for the season the manager started in.

Career path

Gutter sales manager FAQ

Which physical tasks come with a gutter sales manager's site visits?

The template's lifting, weather and safety gear lines describe site visits. The manager may carry a sample case, a measuring wheel or a light ladder from the truck, walk around a house with a rep in rain, cold or heat, and wear a hard hat or safety glasses on a builder's site. Most days are still spent in the office, on calls and in meetings.

How much does a gutter sales manager make?

Sales managers who work for foundation, structure, and building exterior contractors earned a median of $107,500 a year ($51.68 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $82,690 and $157,740 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and bonus terms.

Should gutter reps offer guards on every estimate?

Offering is fine; pushing isn't. Have reps show a guard option on each replacement quote where trees hang over the roof, explain what it will and won't do, and record the answer. Track how often each rep adds guards. A rep who sells guards on every house, even with no trees nearby, needs a talk.

When should a gutter sales manager go on an estimate?

Go when the job is bigger or riskier than usual: a tall commercial building, an older home with half-round or copper gutters, an unhappy past customer, or a first meeting with a new builder. Also ride along with each new rep in the first weeks, and with any rep whose callbacks or cancellations jump.

How many estimates can one gutter rep run in a day?

Drive time and the house decide it. A ranch home with one guard question goes quickly; a two-story with valleys, several roof lines and a ladder check takes longer. Leave reps time to measure and photograph every side, then look at callbacks before you add appointments to the day.
