What a gutter sales rep does differently

A gutter estimate is a drainage plan with a price on it. The rep picks the gutter size, the outlet spots and the guard before the crew ever sees the house.

  • Size the gutter to the rain

SMACNA's gutter and downspout sizing calculator follows its Architectural Sheet Metal Manual and uses the rain that falls in 5 minutes during a 10-year or 100-year storm. It points users to NOAA's precipitation frequency server for current rainfall at a location. Learn the method so you know when a large or steep roof needs a bigger gutter or more downspouts. • Long runs may need an outlet at each end

Gentek's installation guide slopes the gutter toward the nearest outlet and says a long run may need an outlet at either end, with the slope measured from the middle. Plan and price those outlets on the estimate rather than leaving the crew to find out on install day, and mark where each new downspout will land. • Check what the hangers will bite into

Gentek's guide says that when the fascia board is a nominal 1 inch thick or less, the gutter spikes go into the ends of the rafters or trusses. Press on the fascia, look for soft spots and note where the rafter tails sit. Rotten or thin boards change the hanging plan and the price, and the homeowner should hear that before signing, not from the crew. • Read the house for water clues

Stained siding, washed-out mulch, peeling paint on the fascia and a damp basement corner show where water goes today. Ask the homeowner where it spills over in a hard rain, and photograph every side of the house. The proposal then answers the problem they've seen, and the crew gets a picture of each run.

  • Match the guard to what falls on the roof

Maple leaves, pine needles, seed pods and shingle grit load a guard in different ways. Walk the yard, look up at the trees and check what's sitting in the old gutters. Offer the guard that fits that debris, and tell the homeowner plainly what it won't keep out.

How much gutter sales representatives make

The closest BLS group for gutter sales representatives is sales representatives of services. Sales representatives of services who work for foundation, structure, and building exterior contractors earned a median of $33.65 an hour ($69,990 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s about the same as the $69,990 median for sales representatives of services in all industries. About 19,670 of the 1,256,010 sales representatives of services in that survey work for structure and exterior contractors.

Base salary plus commission on sales. The template makes commission depend on survey scores and callbacks, so a rep who sells the wrong size or skips a downspout feels it in pay.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach

Hire for these

  • Measures a house accurately and sketches each run clearly
  • Explains drainage in plain words at a kitchen table
  • Sets up and climbs an extension ladder safely to see the roof edge
  • Writes neat proposals and CRM notes the same day
  • Closes without pressure tactics and keeps promises small

Teach these on the job

  • Gutter sizing and outlet planning by your company's method
  • Your guard lineup and which debris each one handles
  • Your price book, colors and coil options
  • Aerial measurement reports and your estimating software
  • How the install team wants jobs handed over

Expect a measuring wheel, a tape, an extension ladder, a tablet or phone that takes photos, and estimating software such as ServiceTitan or a quoting tool tied to the CRM. Some companies add aerial roof reports to check lengths on tall homes.

Gutter sales representative interview questions

Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.

  1. Situational · Being honest about guards

A homeowner asks whether gutter guards mean they'll never need cleaning. What do you say?

A strong answer: Explains honestly that guards cut cleaning but most still need some maintenance depending on trees and guard type, and shows what the warranty actually covers.

  2. Behavioral · Closing on value

Tell me about a gutter sale you won without being the cheapest. What made the difference?

A strong answer: Showed clear differences such as hangers, material and downspout count, honestly, and the customer chose value.

Gutter sales representative KPIs

The template's targets reflect one company's goals. Base yours on your own lead flow and average job size, and look at guard and gutter numbers separately.

Sales Conversion Rate
Signed jobs divided by estimates the rep ran, counted once the deposit clears. Split company, self-generated and rehash leads so each rep is judged on like leads.
Monthly Revenue Target
Signed revenue per month from the CRM, net of cancellations, read against the season so fall guard months and slow winter months aren't judged alike.
Customer Satisfaction Score (CSAT)
Survey scores from the rep's sold jobs after install. Look in the comments for promises the crew couldn't match.
Lead Response Time
Time between a new lead appearing in the CRM and the rep's first call or text, from the system's time stamps. Track weekend leads apart.
30/60/90-day ramp expectations
Count signed jobs at each checkpoint and review every proposal with the sales manager. Early on, accurate measuring matters as much as the sales count.

Gutter sales representative FAQ

Why does the gutter sales rep template ask for lifting 50 pounds?

Mostly ladders and samples. The rep carries and sets up an extension ladder to look at the fascia, hangers and roof edge, and brings guard samples and gutter sections to the door. Estimates happen outside in summer sun, fall rain and winter cold, so the rep walks the whole house in whatever the day brings. On tall homes, the rep may work from the ground with photos instead.

How much does a gutter sales representative make?

Sales representatives of services who work for foundation, structure, and building exterior contractors earned a median of $33.65 an hour ($69,990 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $49,750 and $98,230 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.

What if a homeowner wants a smaller gutter than the rep recommends?

Show them why you picked the size: roof area, pitch and the heavy-rain figure for their area. Then offer the smaller option at its price and note on the signed proposal that the homeowner chose it. If overflow follows, the record shows whose choice it was, and the sales manager can count that callback fairly.

Should a gutter sales rep quote small repairs?

Usually not. A loose hanger or a leaking corner is a service call, booked by the office and fixed by a crew. The rep's time goes to replacements and guards. If a repair would solve the problem, the rep should say so honestly. That homeowner may well call back when the whole system needs replacing.

How soon can a new gutter rep run estimates alone?

Once they can measure a house, plan outlets and price a job the way the sales manager would. Pair a new rep with a senior rep or the manager for the first estimates, and review each proposal before it goes out. A rep who came off an install crew is often quicker at measuring and slower at selling.
